GHANA OVERTAKE NIGERIA ON MEDAL TABLE

IMG 5594Ghana staged a last minute fight to overhaul rivals Nigeria from the summit of the medal table after the later led throughout the last six days in the ending Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Games.

The host racked in five gold medals in boxing at the finals held at the rlg Hathramani Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium late Thursday to push up the ladder.

With the hall filled to capacity; the crowd cheered on quintet Jessie Lartey, Duke Michah, Sulemanu Tetteh, Lawson Railwan and Emmanuel Martey to go for gold and they responded with victories that left the partisan supporters chanting.

Fans favourite Michah who won every bout on his way to the final by way of knockout , defeated Benin’s Adande Jesugnon 11-6 after three rounds in the flyweight category .

FIVE GHANAIAN BOXERS FOR FINALS

IMG 6350Five Ghanaian boxers have qualified for the final of the ongoing Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Games.

The quintet booked their places in the final with convincing results in the semi-final held on Thursday at the Sports Hall of the Accra Stadium.

Fan’ favourite Duke Micah maintained his short cut run with a second round knockout victory over Senegalese Moustapha Mbalke in the flyweight division. Micah will face Jesugnon Adande of Benin, who beat Moussa Sahaba of Nigeria in the battle for gold.

In the bantamweight category, Sulemana Tetteh also defeated Mohamadou Bohari of Nigeria 8-3 to set up a final date with Nigerian Okerinde Semiu. Semiu outclassed Amed Sadek of Burkina Faso 14-7.

VOLLEY BALL FINALS ON THURSDAY

IMG 5066The stage is set for the finals of the male and female volleyball competition at the second edition of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Games underway in Ghana on Thursday, June 21, 2012.

After four days of exciting matches, the curtain will be drawn at the Accra Sports Stadium when host, Ghana and Niger lock horns in the male finals. Benin and Togo will compete for bronze. 

On the women front, Ghana plays Cote D’Ivoire in the finals

IMG 5075Cote D’Iviore female Handball team on Wednesday spanked hosts Ghana to claim Gold at the second edition of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Games underway in Accra after an entertaining duel.

The Ivorians proved superior in every department to defeat Ghana 27-12 to pluck their first gold medal at the competition that have brought 11 countries on the sub region together.

LOC CHAIRMAN LAUDS GAMES OFFICIALS

IMG 6167Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the ongoing Economic Community of West Africa State (ECOWAS) Games has lauded the officiating team for their apt performance at competition that ends in Accra on Friday.

“I must admit that I have been very impressed with the organization of the games and the manner in which the officiating team has fared this far.”

The LOC Chairman told the media at a press conference on Wednesday that the bi-annual games which is yet to witness any unfair officiating to warrant protest from any quarters is indicative of the high level of performance exhibited by the officials.
